Oh, Look What I Found. My Blog.

I don't know what to be more surprised by, really...that the Sprint PCS Uploader I put up back in 2004 still works, or that people still use it. Regardless, it's going away in the next few days, as I plan to repurpose (well, let's be fair, this place never had a purpose) this whole site.

In any case, expect the whole site to undergo some changes in the next few days, as I ramp up development on a couple of new projects. Also, if you're reading this on Blogger, 1.) why? and 2.) this has moved permanently to a self-contained WP setup at http://www.liquidfish.net, so expect this to be the last post you ever see.

I mean, from me. Here. On Blogger.

Rake + Git Bash = Woes

Hey, what's up? Nice to see ya. You look good.

This is a pretty random thing to post after an eight month absence, but I don't feel like creating an account on rubyforge.org to post a reply there to this thread:

http://rubyforge.org/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=22539&group_id=167&atid=715

That's six months old at this point, but it's high on the Google results for the error I was having, which was occurring while trying to use rake or gem from within a git bash shell
$ gem
sh.exe": /c/Ruby/bin/gem: D:/Users/Luis/projects/oss/oci/installer2-trunk/ruby/bin/ruby.exe^M: bad interpreter: no medium

This seems to have been a fancy way of saying "bad path".

Anyway, after installing Ruby with the one-click, I had to open the script files for both rake and gem (those exact file names, no extensions) in my Ruby/bin folder, and replace "D:/Users/Luis/projects/oss/oci/installer2-trunk/ruby/bin/ruby.exe" with my Ruby/bin path (C:\Ruby\bin).

Rake and Gem worked fine in git bash after that, but I beat my head against this for a while, so hopefully can keep someone else from doing the same. Note that rake and gem worked just fine from a Windows command prompt, even before replacing the paths.

I also see that I'm going to have to fix these newfangled post labels if I'm going to use them.

O HAI

We found this big and extremely aggressive son of a bitch on our porch the other day.

Click for full size, if you dare. You really can't tell from the picture, of course, but fully extended, he had a legspan of almost three inches, and would step to anyone who approached him. D knocked down his web with a broom after it looked like he was no longer in it, and he came running around the corner of the porch column and tried to get on the broom.

So, I am trying to be more tolerant of spiders, leaving them alone unless they really bother me, and then trying to shoo them off, but one that size and with that much of a chip on its shoulder, Hulk smash. I feel very guilty whenever I kill a spider, which makes arachnophobia a real bitch, lemme tell ya.

I Do Not Weigh Less Than A Duck

Inexplicably, I felt like posting here, but not to say anything noteworthy. This morning, already quite late for work, I was putting in one of my contacts when it flew off my finger. I spent the next twenty1 minutes hunting for it on the ground with a flashlight, before finding it on the toilet seat. If I had another one for that eye, I wouldn't have spent twenty minutes looking, so yeah, I cleaned that bastard off and put it in my eye. It's amazing that any part of my body still works, really.

Tomorrow morning, we're getting up early and floating down some river - no, I don't know which one, but I'm not driving there or back, and it probably only goes one direction once you're on it. I have 242 cans of Tecate and a fancy new hat.

1 On Writing Out Numerals: the accepted standard, so I am given to understand, is to write out the numbers one through ten, and use numerals for numbers 11 to 99,9993. I chose to write out twenty, because I am twice as awesome.

2 C'mon, I gotta draw the line somewhere, I'm not made of time.

4 Isn't it fun going through and reading all the footnotes?

5 The famous recursive footnote5

Yeah, I totally ripped off those last two.

RIP Gary Gygax

You may have been a purported intellectual thief and the godfather of all nerds, but you are disturbingly responsible for how my life has turned out.

I'll pour a 2d20 out for ya.

Twitch

Today marks the end of the first week of my new smoke-free status, having quit last weekend for my birthday. So far, so good...I'm actually surprised at how relatively easy it's been. A couple of times I've been out at bars and wanted one, but I was one of the only smokers left in my immediate group of friends, so I'm not around it that much otherwise. Dad had me start on Chantix, which I had never heard of, but I'm guessing it's Latin for miracle drug. If you have any intentions of ditching the smoking habit, I recommend it strongly. I've had virtually no cravings or withdrawal symptoms.

The More You Know™

In other news, Gameheads and I make our collective big screen debut this coming weekend at Saint Louis's ShowMeCon, and I apparently have my own IMDB page, a fact I have just this second stumbled upon! Of course, it's pretty blank, but still. IMDB!
